If you can’t go out, go in.
We’re all trying to steady ourselves and adjust to our new lives under quarantine. I’ve been bombarded with online programs and digital offerings on how to make the most of my self-distancing time. There’s a steady drumbeat in my email inbox of do something, learn something, create something while I’m stuck indoors. And I will, eventually. For now, I’m going to detox, to the extent I can while running a business.
I had the luxury of doing a two week digital detox as part of a retreat I did in Colombia earlier this year. And man, were those two weeks amazing. Going analog gave me the space to relax, recharge and truly settle into myself and my surroundings. I learned that not having my attention pulled by emails, texts, calls, and breaking news, if only for a short time, is far more powerful than I imagined. By several orders of magnitude more powerful. It was incredible. The difference between what I was able to do and create from that detoxed place compared to my ordinary, digitally-influenced life was profound.
If I don’t get back to right away on nights or weekends over these next few weeks, assume I’m on a digital detox. After I detox I’ll decide how to best make the most of this time. I’d love to know – how do you’re navigating this new world and have you tried a digital detox? Let me know in the comments below.
